Can You Drink Coffee with Clear Aligners?
May 14, 2026
For many clear aligner wearers, coffee is part of the daily routine. The problem is not only the coffee itself - it is what happens after you remove your aligners.
Most clear aligner patients are expected to wear their aligners for about 20-22 hours a day. That usually leaves only 2-4 hours total for meals, drinks other than water, brushing, and cleaning.
So if one coffee break turns into 45-60 minutes without aligners, that single break can use a big part of your daily “aligners-out” time.
Coffee can also affect how clear your aligners look. In one lab study, researchers tested clear aligner materials in coffee, black tea, Coca-Cola, and Red Bull over 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days. Coffee caused the highest average color change: 15.156, compared with 9.052 for black tea, 4.374 for Coca-Cola, and 4.584 for Red Bull.
In simple words: in this lab test, coffee stained more than the other drinks.
The same study also showed that different aligner materials reacted differently. After 7 days of coffee exposure, measured color change ranged from 4.28 in one sample group to 26.38 in another.
That does not mean one cup of coffee will ruin your aligners - but it does show why repeated coffee exposure is not a great habit if you want your trays to stay clear.
The safest routine is simple: remove your aligners before coffee, keep them in a clean case, drink your coffee, rinse your mouth with water, and put your aligners back in on time. When possible, keep coffee breaks short and intentional - for example, around 10–20 minutes instead of “I’ll put them back in later.”
Your aligners should not end up in a napkin, loose in your bag, or forgotten on your desk. A clean case and a simple reminder can help protect both your aligners and your treatment routine.
Coffee is not the enemy. Unplanned aligner breaks are.
