Eating and Drinking With Your Aligner In - It's Riskier Than You Think

It's not just about staining. Anything besides water gets trapped underneath your aligner - stuck against your tooth for hours, way past where your saliva can reach to wash it away.

Why not?

  • Food: not just hard candy - any food. Aligners aren't built for chewing at all; they'll crack or warp under the pressure.
  • Drinks: anything but water gets trapped in the gap between the tray and your tooth, feeding bacteria for hours.

What's actually okay

  • Food: chewies, or Movemints - a mint made specifically to seat your aligner, dissolves in your mouth. Don't swallow chewies; they're reusable.
  • Drinks: only water - and not hot, it warps the plastic.

What "trapped" really means

Your saliva actually fights bacteria all day, rinsing your teeth naturally. Your aligner blocks it from doing that job in the gap underneath. Depending on what got trapped there:

  • Colored (coffee, tea, wine, soda) → stains the aligner, often permanently
  • Sugary or acidic (soda, juice) → feeds bacteria and erodes enamel right against the tooth
  • Alcohol → dries out your mouth, making it easier for bacteria to grow

The fix is simple: take the aligner out for anything but water, and rinse your mouth before putting it back in.
