How Should Patients Really Clean Their Clear Aligners?
May 07, 2026
Clear aligners are almost invisible - but bacteria can still see them. Since patients wear aligners for 20-22 hours a day, saliva, food residue, and microbial biofilm can build up quickly. That makes daily cleaning an essential part of clear aligner therapy, not just a cosmetic habit.
Recent research tested several cleaning solutions on clear aligner material and evaluated their effect on Streptococcus mutans biofilm and color stability. The findings suggest that some simple, low-cost options - including diluted white vinegar and neutral detergent - may help reduce bacterial biofilm without causing significant color changes in the tested aligners.
At the same time, patients should not improvise. Hot water, abrasive toothpaste, harsh chemicals, or random home hacks may affect the aligner’s clarity, surface, or fit. Providers should give patients a clear, safe, and repeatable cleaning routine from day one.
The practical takeaway: aligner hygiene should be prescribed, not guessed. A simple daily routine - rinse, gentle brush, safe soak, and clean storage - can help patients keep their aligners clearer, fresher, and easier to wear consistently.
